Hey girl, just a heads up. I wonât be home when you get back. Going down to that casting call with L, then checking out the scene in South Beach. Leaving tonight after work and calling out tomorrow, which means Iâm probably fired, but IDGAF. Bigger and better things ahead!
Callie had replied, and there was a whole back-and-forth exchange after that, mostly about Miami nightlife and how much Frightmares sucked. None of it told me anything more important than what the time stamp confirmed: Bethany had sent the text on Friday, hours before our shift began. I had no reason to think it was anything but legit.
But if Bethany was in Miami, with or without some random guy, what was her stuff doing in her work locker? If she wasnât dead, whatâwhoâhad I found in the sarcophagus?
âThank you for this,â I said anyway, because Callie deserved all the thanks for entertaining my bullshit in the first place. âDo you happen to know anything about her boyfriend? Where he lives, what he doesââ
âSorry, I never met himâshe didnât bring him around here.â She paused, considering. âI mean, maybe she has, but Iâve been on location up in Atlanta for the past two weeks. Just got back last night.â
âAnd you really donât know who sheâs with, or where she is? She hasnât checked in with you or anything?â
âHon, Iâm not her mama. Sheâs a big girl, sheâs off with her boyfriend, and thatâs the end of my involvement. Thanks for stopping by.â
She stepped back into the apartment, door already closing on her parting words, leaving us with the buzz of tree frogs, and traffic, and a blaring TV, audible through someoneâs window. Maya and I stared at each other in the hallway, buried beneath a landslide of new questions. I had no idea how to go about answering any of themâand no clue what weâd find if we tried to dig our way out.
